!! Let’s Talk Hybrid Pricing

Modern B2B SaaS companies are increasingly turning to hybrid pricing for its many advantages in properly aligning price to value across different customer segments in a fair and transparent way. Hybrid pricing is a strategy that combines two or more pricing models within a single plan.

?? How Wingback supports hybrid pricing

Wingback fully embraces hybrid pricing, allowing you to create sophisticated pricing plans that accurately reflect your product's value. With Wingback, you can combine any number of different pricing models within a single plan. This includes recurring monthly or annual fees, multiple per-user seat types (each with its own pricing logic), one or more usage-based components, and one-time fees. All these elements can be combined in a single coherent plan that your customer subscribes to.
Our hybrid pricing support extends to all aspects of billing. You can easily set up tiered pricing, volume discounts, and usage limits with overage charges. Wingback also provides real-time usage monitoring, allowing customers to track their consumption against their plan limits.

Our hybrid pricing capabilities extend to our self-serve components too. This means you can offer complex hybrid plans through both self-serve and sales-led motions, generate accurate quotes for custom enterprise deals, and gain valuable insights into how different pricing components contribute to your revenue.

×× Chargebee does not support hybrid pricing

Chargebee simply does not support multiple priced elements per plan. A plan can only have one pricing model defined in it. So hybrid pricing models cannot be built in Chargebee.

A plan in Chargebee can be either a flat fee, a per-unit fee, a usage fee or a one-time charge. It cannot be a combination of those.
So the only workaround to try to do hybrid pricing in Chargebee is to awkwardly and laboriously subscribe a customer to multiple independent plans where one is set as the base plan and the others have to be modeled as add-ons.

But B2B SaaS companies deploying hybrid pricing do not think of their plans as being composed of multiple add-ons like this. Add-ons are typically thought of as optional elements that a minority of customers elect to purchase, not as strictly-required elements in a subscription.

!! Modeling hybrid plans in this disjointed workaround way in Chargebee inevitably leads to big problems:

1 Customer confusion

— What customers will see on their invoice and in their billing portal is that they are not subscribed to a single plan with a clear name like “Premium Edition”. Instead, they see that they are subscribed to multiple seemingly unrelated items, some of which seem like optional add-ons even though they are not. Confused customers are less likely to upgrade, take longer to pay their invoices, and tend to have lower lifetime value.

2 Self-serve stops working, you have to build it yourself

— Chargebee provides some components for self-serve pricing pages, checkout flows and a customer billing portal. But these are all designed around the idea that a customer will subscribe to just one plan. And in Chargebee one plan = one price. So hybrid pricing plans with multiple prices per plan breaks this model. It means that the Chargebee out-of-the-box components for self-serve cannot be used when modeling hybrid plans with the workaround of a base plan plus add-ons. Customers could simply deselect add-ons from their subscription and cause chaos.

This means that you would need to ask your Engineering teams to engineer handbuilt self-serve checkout and billing portal front-end and back-end logic, calling the Chargebee APIs in the background to create the multiple workaround subscriptions. And the complexity only gets worse when you need to support self-serve plan upgrade scenarios.

3 Error-prone sales quoting process

— When quoting a deal in Chargebee for a customer needing a hybrid pricing plan the salesperson needs to remember to select the correct base plan plus all the add-ons. If they forget one of the required elements there are no guardrails. Incorrect quotes like this can go out to customers and get accepted by them. The error might only be seen at the time of activation, or after multiple billing cycles have completed.

Unwinding from such egg-on-face unforced errors requires lots of apologies to customers, plus lots of costly manual work in your back-office to recalculate invoice adjustments to true-up customer accounts.

4 Disjointed Analytics

— Your teams will no longer see that a customer is subscribed to a single plan like “Premium Edition” with all revenue neatly grouped under that plan. Instead, they will see that the customer has a base plan plus a bunch of independent add-ons. Each with their own revenue buckets.

When a customer upgrades or downgrades the expansion or contraction MRR does not go from one single plan to another cleanly, but rather from one set of base + addon plans to another set. It can get very messy.
